We now only had 5 days left & I was mentally already eating prison food. We stopped for a rest & started to reform a plan of whether there was another way. It turned out there was only one shortcut, which was about 200 miles back the way we had come. But would take us onto the main road to Moscow. Just after we had completed stage 4 of the Siberian World Rally Championships, another obstacle appeared. It was a very small village, which didn’t show up on the map…Another classic Maps.Me cock up to add to the list. The road had changed from gravel to several inches of thick juicy mud. Which was cutting it bloody fine, as now my Mongolian Visa was close to expiring. We spent these days visiting numerous national parks, horse riding, hiking, yurt-ing & everything else in between. We made it to Moscow with 1 day to spare, in which we explored the capital, The Kremlin, St Basils & felt human again after 9 days of intense endurance driving nearly 5,000 miles. On the last day we were up early as my partner had booked a flight from Moscow to London. Always fearing the clock & especially on the last day, we made a quick escape to the airport. My plan was to drop her off & drive across the border into Belarus. With the coloured history of Iraq we were expecting the worst in terms of customs & security checks. To our utter bemusement, as soon as we showed our British passports we were ushered through & reunited with our luggage in under 15 minutes. So far, transport had been relatively easy. So once more we asked our driver from the day before to take us to Dohuk on the other side of the country. The basics of your name, where are you from & how are you etc…As we awkwardly shuffled down the mountain, trying not to damage our feet any more. We once again walked past the kids & their entire family. Before you know it we are sat down with about 25 other people all staring at us like zoo animals. Although it does snow heavily in winter months, while we were there it was a roasting 32 degrees. Pleased with our progress we needed to find somewhere to stay. We could have stayed in the posh chalet’s at the top of the mountain, but were very expensive. So we decided to chance it with the motel opposite the Ski-lift.
